Notes
"Kicking And Screaming" is Tom Varga's second album release. The opening track, "Jerry's Dam", was written the day Jerry Garcia died. "I was playing with some new chord progressions when a good friend of mine called and told me the news. The lyrics quickly fell out of the sky because I was so upset about his death. The song is more about the passing of a state of mind than the actual man himself. I was not a big Grateful Dead fan but I had been to many shows just for the experience. It was really the end of a long era. It was about facing a cold reality that many people didn't want to face".
"The third song, "Tony's Snoring", was written about a guy who would always fall asleep at the bar I was drinking in during that time in my life. No one seemed to mind. In fact, if he wasn't snoring at the bar every night I think people would have been worried about his health".
"A Place Called Home" was the single on the album which received great reviews and considerable local airplay.
Track number 8, "Baltimore" was written in a hotel room in Baltimore. "My brother was getting married and family and friends were traveling from all across the country. Problem was, it was one of the biggest snow storms of the year. The song is really was a prayer for everyone to arrive safely and luckily, they did"
Track 12, "1000 Animals", was based on an actual petting zoo by the same name in Lake Placid, New York. "When I was a kid, it seemed that every few months or so some non indigenous animal would escape from the 1000 Animals. Or at least that's what our parents told us to keep us from roaming outside in the woods for too long".
"Kicking and Screaming" is an album that reads like a book of short stories. Give it a listen, you won't be disappointed.
