As only the second album produced by Cousin Curtiss, Wood Stove Stereo is an incredible leap in the right direction for this young artist. Teaming up with expert musicians Jason Walsh, Marty Fredrick, Heath Williamson, and Russ Dalbke, Cousin Curtiss has created an album that is musically entertaining to all ages and interests from start to finish. Very rarely is an album stimulating and provocative from beginning to end yet Cousin Curtiss has found a way to create that exact experience at a young age.
Like Cousin Curtiss’s first album, What’s in the Water?, Wood Stove Stereo addresses a multitude of social-political issues as well as the fun and hilarity that surrounds most individuals in their early 20s. Cousin Curtiss has a distinct way to portray the lust and desire young men feel to experience all aspects of life as well as communicate the larger issues like overpopulation and pollution. When listening to this album, one is bound to experience the sincerity of Cousin Curtiss’s lyrics as well as his contagious laughter and incredible comic relief. Wood Stove Stereo is a perfect representation of a youthful mind in today’s world seeking out sociopolitical justice and yet holding firm to an optimistic state of mind.
Considering the album on a purely instrumental basis, the musical mastery illustrated by Jason Walsh, Marty Fredrick, Heath Williamson, and Russ Dalbke is nothing short of incredible. Walsh’s guitar solos are so instinctual yet creative they add the perfect amount to each song, Fredrick’s drumming is the quintessential element to every song’s backbone that will make any feet tap, heads bob, and hips groove; meanwhile, Williamson’s and Dalbke’s bass flavor is a textbook example of how to boost the message of a song with resonating lows and finger-slapping-behind-the-scenes solos.
