Description
This three CD set features major piano works of Robert Schumann (1810-1856) played on two grand pianos dating from Schumann's time by early piano specialist John Khouri.
Notes
In this 3 CD set, early piano specialist John Khouri plays major piano works by Robert Schumann on grand pianos by Joseph Bohm ca 1828 and John Broadwood 1832, Carnaval Op 9 and the Piano Sonata in F# minor Op 11 receiving their first recordings on early piano. All of the works on these CDs are played on the Bohm piano except for the three pieces Op 99 from Bunte Blatter which are played on the 1832 Broadwood.
Schumann, a pupil of Friedrich Wieck, grew up with the sound and feel of German and Viennese pianos, so the Bohm piano is a very suitable one for such works as the Toccata Op 7, Abegg Variations Op 1, Etudes Symphoniques, Kreisleriana, and Caraval Jest from Vienna. It's warm, translucent bass and tenor registers and brilliant colorful treble are ideally suited to Schumann's thickly scored textures and one can follow faithfully Schumann's lavish pedal directions.
Superb recording quality by engineer Don Ososke make this a very desirable and unique set of CDs.
