Description

A special Hip Hop band from Taiwan. Their music is inspired by Taiwan traditional music elements. They bring samples of Taiwanese folk songs and traditional music elements and mix them in HipHop to create a very unique sound.

Notes

Kou Chou Ching is a creative team that embraces Taiwan culture and spirit.

Five members in the team: fishLIN (MC), Fan-Chiang (MC), DJ J-CHEN (Turntables), Achino (Instruments), and Yobo (Instruments). fishLIN, Fan-Chiang, and Jasonshu started Kou Chou Ching in the summer of 2003, but later Jasonshu decided to focus on his study and left the band. Afterward, DJ J-CHEN, who graduated Fu-Hsin Arts School, joined the band in 2004. He was recruited because of his mastery of scratch. Two instrumentalists Achino and Yobo were enlisted in 2005, who play traditional Eastern instruments such as suona and bong-ze. Kou Chou Ching was now officially in the game.

In summer 2005, Kou Chou Ching put together all of their tracks and released an EP Fu-Ke. They printed only a thousand copies and now it is a hard-to-find item. In 2007, Kou Chou Ching received a publication grant from the Government Information Office of Taiwan and thus released a full-length album KOU!! It's Coming Out!!! Up until now they have accumulated experiences of running almost two hundred shows. They also went gigging in Japan and went respect from the local scene.

Kou Chou Ching find inspiration from Taiwan’s local materials. They turn to Nanguan, Neiguan, Hakka Ba-Yin, Taiwan Opera, Folk Songs, Taiwanese oldies from the 40s and 70s, and relatively new music. Paying respect to American hip hop sampling Funk and Jazz, Kou Chou Ching look to original Taiwanese music that is fostered on the island, as is pioneering and innovative.

Kou Chou Ching write just about everything in Taiwan. Ranging from beautiful natural scenes to childhood memories, from love and brotherhood to history, from environmentalist concerns to cultural heritage, Kou Chou Ching believe that music encourages people to be kind and care about society, to love and unite, and therefore to better their life.

Since they started rhyming in 2003, Kou Chou Ching have received wide attention in the press, islandwide or overseas: “A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity” (Taipei Times), “Kou Chou Ching Harvest Hard, Rhyming Is Not Ranting” (Pots), “Kou Chou Ching Find Fun in Tradition” (Taiwan News), “First Step to Localize Hip Hop” (Big Sound), “Kou Chou Ching’s Local Hip Hop” (Taiwan Panorama), “Song from the Roots” (Taiwan Review), “Canciones Autoctonas” (Taiwan Hoy), “Taiwanese Rappers Build Worldwide Audience: Hip Hop Band Draws on U.S. Rap, Taiwanese Folk” (California-based Mercury News), and “Songs from the Underground: Meet Taiwan’s Big Hip Hop Hope Kou Chou Ching” (JUNK Magazine from Malaysia). SBS Radio, Australia’s biggest radio station, gave an exclusive interview with Kou Chou Ching, who were introduced as “Hip Hop Group from Taiwan” in Japan, U.S., Hong Kong, U.K., the Netherlands, Israel, Portugal, and France. Kou Chou Ching want to spread the music made in Taiwan to every country to let the world know more about Taiwan.
