Description
"Numbers & Shapes" is composer/musician Rebecca Brandt's debut album... a mix of electro-acoustic, contemporary classical, and electronic sounds with some fun instrumentations!
Notes
"Numbers & Shapes" is New York-based composer/musician Rebecca Brandt's debut album. The 14-track album of original compositions was written and orchestrated for 30+ instruments and blends a variety of genres, mainly electro-acoustic, contemporary classical, and electronic sounds. Some songs show an influence from jazz, alternative rock, and film scores. The album was a top-25 shortlist nomination for "Best New Age Album" at the 2013 Grammy Awards.
"Numbers & Shapes" plays with different instrumentation, ranging from solo piano to string quartet to a mixture of woodwinds and electronics; the closing track features a 25-piece orchestra. The idea of numbers and patterns and different concepts of music theory were key aspects in creating this album. Rebecca also referenced shapes in her writing, playing with contours, builds, and musical flows.
Rebecca and her production team created a completely mobile recording set-up that allowed them to reach musicians, room sounds, and instruments they may not have been able to utilize otherwise. She even arranged a recording session in Miami, while giving notes via video conference in Brooklyn. It was an experiment in "outsourcing" the recording process; to utilize technology to be a contributing part of a session while physically removed from the performance.
The music itself is intriguing - sometimes mysterious, lighthearted, emotional - yet always beautiful.
