Notes

The Wandering Ascetic, the new project band formed by Kathir, frontman for pioneer vedic metal band, Rudra, along with long-time friend, Kannan, in late 2011. The band started of as a two piece band with Kathir handling vocals and guitar; with Kannan on drums. The band eventually recruited Jay, another long time friend to come on board as their new bassist. The three members were previously part of another band, 7th River, which disbanded halfway through recording their debut album.

“I started The Wandering Ascetic (TWA) with Kannan and Jay to create an outlet to express another side to myself. Something that I would not do with RUDRA because of obvious reasons. Musically TWA is a part of me that digs old school death metal & black metal… TWA also allowed me to pen ideas that I always wanted to write about.” states Kathir, Rudra’s frontman on forming The Wandering Ascetic.

The Wandering Ascetic was chosen as the name for the band, who describe their music as an Ascetic; with no agenda, no plans and no home. Thus, approach their music in a similar fashion; with very little emphasis on sound perfection or song structures. What is heard on their new EP is as intended to be!

“We decided that we are not going to make the album sound clinical by using click tracks. We recorded the drums and guitars live in the studio. We did all the guitars & drums in a single take and we refused to improve anything on the EP even when we sensed some imperfections.” quipps Kathir on the recording of the new EP.

With an array of influences and styles, the band has described their sound as a mash of various musicial genres, largely black metal, shoe gaze, crust punk and anything that has inspired them to churn out music in the most straight forward manner possible. Their new EP aptly titled “Manifest Destiny” deals with themes such as tempting fate, oppression, human psyches, philosophy, injustice etc.
