Description

Story-telling songs in an alt-country/indie rock frame of mind. "Soul Asylum meets Elliott Smith" in this 12 song journey through life's ups-and-downs.

Notes

Bourbon Therapy is Aaron Skiles' debut solo album. It is a 12-song concept album that follows the story of a man who has struggled with relationships, substances, and the complexities of life. Despite his failures, he is determined to make things right. The songs are performed by a talented group of San Francisco Bay Area musicians.

"Left Behind" starts the tale in Shakespearean foreshadowing form--a short poem-like song to set the stage for the album. "Forever More" the album's second track, provides a bright, harmonized glimpse of the happy ending that could, should, just might be for the protagonist. From there the journey through darkness, desperation, distance and despair begins. "Lie, Cheat & Deal" uses harmonica-driven riffs to explore the pains of gambling addiction as well as the realization that the best plans of man are sometimes worthless. "Meet My First Wife" is the story of a relationship teetering on the rocks. With sad, wailing slide guitar licks, this song finds redemption from the road. "Flailing Again" is a dark exploration of depression and confusion, featuring some of the most creative guitar leads of the entire album. "4 Kids, 12 Beers and a Ball Game" is a Johnny Cash styled storytelling song that documents one father's approach to child rearing, accompanied by drunken slide guitar, piano, and harmonica. "Airport Drinking" features themes of distance combined with efforts to self-medicate the pain that distance leaves behind, driven by beautiful cello and violin parts. "8 Signs (That You Need Therapy)" utilizes layered harmonies to describe one man's realization that the best efforts of professional advice just might be for naught. "Love of My Love Life" is a piano-driven, alt-country love song. "You Are Here" is the theme song to Jack Kennedy's upcoming film of the same title. This power-pop gem features driving guitars, a swirling guitar and harmonica solo, and beautiful male/female harmonies. "Three More For The Road" is a sad, harmonica and acoustic guitar-laden exploration of destructive behavior. Finally the album ends with a unique cover version of Mike Ness's (Social Distortion) "Dear Lover," published by Sony ATV Tunes LLC. This piano-driven song slows the rockabilly classic down and brings the emotions to the surface.
