"Dressed up" acoustic music infused with creativity, style, top notch vocals and stellar guitar work.

2 the Nines is an original musical collaboration between TJ Runnells and Nick Midulla. Primarily an acoustic-based endeavor, the partnership also incorporates electric guitar, bass, drums, beats, percussion, human beatbox and guitar synth to achieve musical cocktails, from simple to complex.

The music features TJ's soulful and haunting vocal melodies accompanied by his unique and sometimes pulsating rhythm guitar work. Lyrically he channels everyday situations to tell stories that are not always based on his own life. He prefers to use more of an abstract writing style, allowing the listener to ponder and question the real meaning of the lyrics.

Nick adds passionate solo guitar playing, utilizing many styles -- acoustic fingerstyle, jazz, blues, classical, rock and others -- to create music that has no boundaries. Adding to the acoustic libations are many other instruments and sounds, giving some songs a more produced, full-band sound … a style which the band also incorporates into their live performances using floor samplers. All sounds used are original, recorded and produced by the duo at Nick's studio in Hollywood.

Musically speaking, 2 the Nines draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, as both TJ and Nick come from drastically different musical influences, a mix which lies at the heart of the duo’s nontraditional sound.

TJ looks to late 80s and early 90s hip hop and R and B artists such as New Edition, Boys to Men and Michael Jackson as his musical base. His older sister Apryl also introduced him to many types of music … her own musical talent was, in fact, a main driving force in his pursuit of a musical career.

Nick, in contrast, grew up listening to and playing guitar-based classic rock, 80s rock, blues, jazz and classical. He studied at the Musician's Institute and currently plays in several bands in LA, as well as producing music in his studio, Midulla Studios.

Ultimately though, it’s the duo’s friendship that adds the proverbial icing on the musical cake, giving them the ability to communicate musically without speaking. This relationship and diverse styles are what 2 the Nines are all about … that, and a fine bottle of wine!
