Description
The Unravelling is a heavy rock/experimental duo described by Suite 101 as "a band who can combine the alternative stylings of Tool with the adventurousness, ambition and refusal to compromise of The Dillinger Escape Plan".
Notes
The Unravelling is a heavy rock/experimental duo from Calgary, Canada. The project's founder and instrumentalist, Gustavo De Beauville, composes and records the music while singer Steve Moore (also of Post Death Soundtrack & Inner Surge) writes the lyrics and vocal parts.
Described by Pure Grain Audio as “overflowing with a bloodthirsty passion”, their music ranges from the engaging and inviting to the aggressive and controversial. A confidante of the band remarked that "The Unravelling sounds like the illegitimate love child of Lisa Gerrard And Zack de la Rocha". Suite 101 says "This is a band who can combine the alternative stylings of Tool with the adventurousness, ambition and refusal to compromise of The Dillinger Escape Plan". They have opened for acts such as Helmet and Bison BC, topped the CJSW Metal charts, and were nominated for 3 2010 Alberta Metal Awards, winning in the best album production category. The Unravelling's music video for "Move Forward Until You Are Dead", directed by Doug Cook, was given a worldwide exclusive on the popular website Metalsucks.net, and their release "13 Arcane Hymns" was listed in Suite 101's "Top Heavy Metal Albums of 2010".
Their debut full length album "13 Arcane Hymns", a psycho-analytical concept album, was released May 13, 2010. The artwork was a collaboration between De Beauville, Gil Katerynych, and Shaun Friesen, who has also collaborated with Tool visionary Alex Grey. The album features many reoccurring lyrical themes, particularly the theme of being buried alive and presumed dead, then crawling your way out, and "moving forward". Metalunderground.com called the release "a surprising firebomb of an album", while Pitch Black Magazine called it "a 13-track emotional and industrial-infused metal masterpiece".
After vocalist Steve Moore encountered a serious personal illness and later, a full recovery, The Unravelling reunited in 2014 with new inspiration, and concepts began to form for new material. They are currently writing and recording new music with a more cinematic/industrial approach. New material will be released in 2014/2015.
