Three Symphonies by Thomas Farmer

(Cover art by Christy F. Waring)

Symphony No. 3 - (subtitled "Variations on a Dream by Martin Luther King Jr") was originally composed in 1975 as a single musical line derived from MLK Jr's iconic "I Have A Dream" speech. The first realization for orchestra, speaker and voices was completed in 1990, but subsequently lost. The current version (presented here) was completed in 2006, and is constructed so that a recording of Dr. King's speech can be played simultaneously.

Symphony No. 9 - composed in 1989 for an ensemble of six marimbas.
Movement I - variations on the Chinese folksong "Feng Yang Flower Drum"
Movement II - variations on the Cantonese lullaby "Watchman"
Movement III - a setting of the Chinese court song "Jade Tree's Blossom"
Movement IV - a final set of variations on "Flower Drum"

Symphony No. 10 - (subtitled "JKL") was composed 1989-91 and was inspired by a paraphrase of Richard Brautigan -
"to some men the most beautiful sight in the world is a sleeping [Asian] woman..."
Movement I - originally was composed as an organ solo titled "Quietly, so as not to wake her..."
Movement II - based on the Appalachian folksong "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair"
