Six "symphonies" realized from graphic or verbal scores composed in the 1970s, utilizing a variety of performing ensembles.


SYMPHONY NO.1 IN G# MINOR (1972-73) - in two movements, two versions for orchestra and symphonic wind band.

Movement 1, "A little faster than Allegro non troppo," was originally conceived as a text score with musical choices spelled out for each desk of performers.
Movement 2, "Variations on a theme of Roger Dodds," is a hybrid graphic and musical score consisting of melodic variations on a 12-bar theme contributed by a close friend at the urging of the composer.

This 2012 recording is of the 1992 realization for orchestra.

SYMPHONY NO. 6 (1976-91) - subtitled "On C-A-G-E"; consists of various short pieces composed between 1976 and 1991 for numerous performing ensembles.

This recording is a 2012 realization combining nearly all of these pieces according to a randomly-generated matrix.

STMPHONY NO. 5 (1975) - a graphic score composed in 1975 with no specified instrumentation.

The first version on this recording is a 1992 realization for two pianos.
The second recording is of a 2012 realization for orchestra.

SYMPHONY NO. 7 "CLASSICAL" (1981) - originally a short text score instructing the "conductor" to choose a symphonic piece from the Classical period, and erase all the tonic and dominant notes from the score and parts, before performing the piece.

This recording was made in 2002 of a 1984 realization for orchestra from three Mozart movements.

SINFONIA HUMANA (SYMPHONY NO. 8) (1981) - a text score consisting of instructions to mimic twelve rhythmic sounds derived from the human body--i.e, pulses on nerve fibers, heartbeats, respiration rates...

This 2007 realization utilizes only percussion instruments.

SYMPHONY NO. 4 (1975) - composed 1975 as hybrid text-music score in two movements, based on a listing of thr works of Karlheinz Stockhausen. The premiere performance was held in 1978 at the University of Utah with four performers.

This recording is from 2007-08 of an orchestral realization completed in 2004.
