Description

Intelligent guitar-work, intricate rhythms, soaring vocals, great songs.

Notes

The Under combines elements of metal, punk, indie, and progressive rock with a strong songwriting emphasis and a style that often strays from convention. Coalescing the influence of innumerable acts with the band members’ own twisted imaginations, The Under forges an epic sound that is aggressive yet hauntingly melodic. Intelligent guitar work, intricate rhythms, soaring vocals, and painstaking attention to songcraft demonstrates that The Under plays for an audience seeking substance in its music.

The Under has returned with a follow-up to their 2007 eponymous EP. Recorded at Galaxy Park Studios in Boston, their first full-length titled Mercurial makes its debut Friday, Feb. 6, at its album release party at O’Brien’s Pub in Allston. The title aptly crystallizes the sound of the album: rapid, unpredictable, and riddled with ingenuity. Mercurial ebbs and flows with various moods and movements in an attempt reshape the landscape of heavy music in the band’s distinctive image.

The Under cracked The Noise’s Top 30 Radio Chart for Boston in December 2007 and again in March 2008 and has garnered a collection of positive press reviews:

Metronome: “Singer-guitarist Daniel Costa, bassist Jason Walker and drummer Randy Odierno, a.k.a. The Under, have resurrected the blazing glory days of Van Halen, Rush and Ozzy Osborne in one fell swoop with the release of their astounding 4-song sampler.... There's no band in Boston playing inspired hard rock music like this these days and I highly recommend you check these guys out.”

Progscape.com: "Nowadays the most interesting stuff is definitely happening where different styles cross over. Sometimes the more diverse they are, the better they work out. The Under certainly doesn't mess around with electronica, avant-garde or free jazz but they seem to have taken great lessons from bands like Black Sabbath, Rush and a thousand of other bands. So on their self-titled debut EP, we have an eclectic mix of rock, prog, metal and punk which instantly infects your ears and makes you wish there was more.”

Adrenaline Fanzine: "This EP from The Under offers an edgy rock infused listen full of melodic vocal hooks and a strong musical accompaniment. An obvious display of many hours spent creating and perfecting songs to bring their name effectively to the masses.”

The Noise: The Under is “here to remind us of the Rock that is in Prog Rock. People who like their Sabbath dark and rocking, but still air-drum to ‘YYZ’ will enjoy this.”

Since 2006, The Under has made the rounds in the clubs of Boston, playing shows at The Middle East, Harper’s Ferry, Great Scott, Church, TT the Bear’s, O’Brien’s Pub and The Abbey Lounge. Planetoid, HOTBLACK, Hydronaut, Anarchy Club and The Boston League of Women Wrestlers are just a few of the numerous acts with whom they have shared the stage.
