Various artists sing folk songs from Western Kentucky as taught to Acie Cargill by Sarah Gertrude Knott and Hattie Tyler Cargill

This is the first of several albums planned to honor and preserve the older music formerly found in Western Kentucky. Actually the wstern part of Kentucky was settled before the eastern, so the music was older and better preserved than in the mountains. Of course, the western part of the state was developed earlier for electricity and radio so the old music disappeared faster.

Two people I was associated with were dedicated music preservationists and I have tried to save as musch of their work as I remember and can find in my notes. A lot of the lyrics had blank spots that I had to fill in and also some of the tune material I had to complete the best I could. The two wmen I am referring to are my grandmother Hattie Tyler Cargill and the noted folklorist Sarah Gertrude Knott who I met and sotudied with at the Princeton, Kentucky Coons Library sometime in the 1970's if I remember correctly.

After I got the material organized and completed the best I could, I recruited some young folksingers who I knew were as dedicated to the old music as I was. These include Debra Cowan who sings on numbers 5, 8, 10,12, 14, 16, 17, and 19. Susan Ruth Brown sings on 6, 13, 15, 18, and 21. Elma Tuomisalo sings on 3 and 9 and her daughter Cora Thiele sings 20. Sally Anne Merrill sings number 2, John Wright sings number 11, Margaret Tyler 18, and Abby Teffeteller sings on 22. Acie Cargill, does most of the instrumental work with some excellent assistance from guitarist Kristina Olsen. Acie Cargill sings on numbers 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 16, 17, 21 and 22.

All the instrumental backgrounds use authentic old tunings and stylings and correct modal scales.
