Description

The debut album from shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) virtuoso Adam Chikushin Tucker combines world music of the past, present, and future.

Notes

The shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) is a seemingly simple instrument that is capable of an incredible variety of sound and musical expression. Unlike complex instruments like the piano that require a simple key-press to make sound, the shakuhachi has only five open holes and a plain-cut transverse blowing edge, requiring remarkably complex manipulation of breath and fingering to play. Bamboo Soul, the debut album from shakuhachi virtuoso Adam Chikushin Tucker, combines world music of the past, present, and future. Its live, instrumental performances feature upbeat, 21st-century tunes for flamenco guitar and shakuhachi; reflective Japanese koto and Korean kayagum; new arrangements for shakuhachi, harp, and Indian tabla; and 14th-century Zen meditational shakuhachi melodies.

Listener Reviews:

"Many thanks for the pleasure of experiencing the beauty and serenity of Adam's music." —Gus & Mary

"Your CD has brought me so much peace and serenity during these difficult times. Every evening as I am winding down and finishing up the day, I play the CD. My favorite phrase in all these years has been 'Listen to your Soul' and now I have the Bamboo Soul CD to lead me on this path. Thank you from the bottom of my heart." —Ellen

"Bamboo Soul is simply wonderful. This album is certainly soulful, joyful, penetrating and relaxing. The music is really easy to listen to, but is complex enough to constantly hold the listener's attention and remain intriguing through each piece. The shakuhachi sounds deeper and more resonating than the western flute, but at the same time it is as delicate and works well with the many combinations of instruments and styles of music that are on this CD. This is a beautiful CD that everyone who likes to diversify their tastes, and unwind with something to take their minds away from the present, ought to own." —Lisa H. Hirsch
