The title "Casting Shadows" refers to the effect memories, people, and events have on the course of a life in progress. If there is a common theme amongst the original compositions of the latest album by guitarist Alan Imberg, it is the reflection on the influence that ones past has on the present.
The initial intent of this album was to create "Devotional" instrumental music, Ambient in style, "to give praise to the Grace I've experienced in my lifetime". But intention and inspiration rarely align and the direction the compositions took were informed by a period of self-reflection that highlighted Alan's admittedly less-than-spiritual evolved state.
The one "cover" piece, an instrumental version of the Robert Lowry hymn, "How Can I Keep From Singing" was the closest, according to Alan, to achieving his goal of making devotional music.
