Piano powered pop and gorgeous vocals tinged with folk, jazz and cabaret edges.

Life. Love. Family. Community.

Alanka doesn't keep a proper journal. She wonders who has that kind of time? Instead she keeps track of key moments in 3-minute bites of music, rhythm and rhyme, developing her own idiosyncratic soundtrack to life.

Alanka has recently released her debut EP, Pieces, on Berzurka Records.

Specialising in heartache of the unrequited variety, a little bit of socio-political activitism and more than a dose of wistful nostalgia, Alanka's debut recording features the twenty-something angst it took her nearly thirty-something self to let go of. It's the album she had to make.

The singer-songwriter's semi-autobiographical piano-powered pop is tinged with folk, jazz, cabaret and musical theatre edges.

Inspired by the songwriters that gave voice to a generation of baby boomers, Alanka's pop tracks are characterised by rich harmonies, lush string arrangements and a sweet-sounding vocal that belies the cutting edge of her lyricism. Her writing is driven by a yearning to go back in time and hang out at the Brill Building with Carole King and Gerry Goffin, hold up the bar at Gerde's Folk City with Joan Baez and Bob Dylan and be politically astute enough to have her songs banned at the age of 15 like Janis Ian.

Listening to Alanka's debut EP is kind of like unlocking a best friend's diary when she first lets you into the secrets she can share while protecting the identities of the (not so) innocent. Not to be missed.

When not utterly consumed by her alter-ego's day job, Alanka can be found hanging around the more and less salubrious of Sydney's singer-songwriter circuits.

Influences include: Neil Sedaka, Janis Ian, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Carole King, Elton John, Billy Joel, Belle & Sebastian, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Bette Midler, Linda Rondstadt, Mamas and the Papas, Beach Boys, America, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Woodie Guthrie, Rufus Wainwright, Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, Peter Allen, Liza Minelli, Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, Megan Washington, Katie Noonan, Otis Redding, Tim Freedman, Ella Fitzgerald, Ninan Simone, Aretha Franklin, Elana Stone, Kate Walsh and Emma Dean.
