Folk trio that features hammered dulcimer, guitar and double bass and intricate three-part vocal harmonies and sings an eclectic mix of traditional, contemporary and original folksongs.
Notes
Wintergreen has recorded four albums over several years, all in a very tasteful, distinctive and inventive style. Their eclectic repertoire is selected from the Anglo-American folk canon, contradance tunes, contemporary folk songs and many songs of their own composition. Their standard instrumentation is hammered dulcimer, guitar and double bass but many songs include other instruments (bowed psaltery, mandolin, recorder, dumbek) and they often have guest musicians adding additional accents (fiddle, percussion, accordion). Three-part harmony singing is a particular strong point of the group and they do some stunning a cappella songs. The members of the group - Alice and Larry Spatz and Jared Polens - each have a lifetime of experience in folk music and together they produce a unique, resonant and compelling brand of folk music. Alice Spatz is a terrific songwriter whose songs take the folk tradition as a starting point and move it into new, highly original, sophisticated and emotionally satisfying directions.
