Description

A mix of Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, Alexi sound is a refreshing combination of soul, pop, and gospel, creating music that not only sounds good, but feels good.

Notes

In an era when soul music is evolving, searching for a new identity, enter Alexi. His music harkens back to the days of Marvin and Stevie, when soul and pop combined, creating mainstream music that touched the body and moved the soul. It’s music with a message; music that not only sounds good, but feels good. This human touch has been lost in contemporary soul music. Alexi is bringing it back.
Alexi began writing songs at age eleven. His early influences included Motown and Elvis Presley, but he discovered gospel music through Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity. In high school he began performing in and composing for local gospel choirs, and he still arranges for and directs a number of gospel choirs in the Boston area today. In 2009, he got his start playing solo shows. He continues to rise on the Boston soul scene, headlining local soul music venues and playing at festivals in and around the area.
Alexi’s music combines in a unique way. The Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke comparisons are inevitable, as for many white artists in the soul genre, but Alexi’s sound is uniquely his own, combining elements of gospel and neo-soul as well. While he sings the captivating love songs common in much of the soul genre, he recaptures a spirituality that has been lost in soul music: the spirit of unity in Gaye’s “What’s Goin’ On?”; the social justice anthem of Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Going to Come.” These references are clear in his sound, placing Alexi firmly in the legacy of the legendary soul artists.
Alexi has performed for a number of notables, including actors Selma Hayek and Laurence Fishburne and political activists and scholars Henry Louis Gates, Jr, Cornel West, and Vice President Joe Biden. He has also performed with Joshua Redman and sung back-up for Angelique Kidjo.
In 2011, he released his single, “Gotta Get Back (To My Music)” and his first EP, “Come On In.” He is currently in the studio, working on his sophomore release, “Something Greater,” to be released in February, 2014.
