Description

Following in the tradition of our first three albums, this fourth album is an eclectic collection of rock styles representing a variety of musical genres.

Notes

AFTERLIFE is a progressive/alternative rock band that formed in January 1986. AFTERLIFE is a trio comprised of Mike Hudson (Guitar, Keyboards and Vocals), Jonathan Dorsey (Bass, Mandolin and Vocals), and Warren Davis (Drums and Assorted Percussion). The band is originally from Carrollton, Georgia and spent their time in the late 80's and early 90's playing their own brand of original music all around the Southeast at various clubs, fraternities, private parties, benefit concerts and other functions. The music of AFTERLIFE was regularly featured on a number of college radio stations in several states, and a couple of commercial stations in Georgia and some surrounding states.

In the early years, the band released three independent albums: "The Frozen Sun" (1988), "The Awakening" (1990), and "Curtain Call" (1991)

In the Summer of 1991, AFTERLIFE took a break which turned out to last a lot longer than any of the three would have ever imagined. Over time, the three members of the band would fine many miles between, especially Warren who lives several hours away from Mike and Jonathan. Jobs and family obligations made it very difficult for the band to regroup, but in the early 2000's, talk began about a possible reunion.

Mike began building version two of his Clockwork Studio in 2009, and by 2011 it was fully operational. With plenty of songs waiting to be recorded, Mike contacted Jonathan and Warren about the possibility of recording some new tracks. After a lot of planning and discussion, the band regrouped in October of 2011 for a weekend recording session. Originally, these tracks were destined to be on a solo album by Mike (but featuring AFTERLIFE on a few tracks). Jonathan also had some new songs that he wanted to record as well, and the very first weekend, the rhythm tracks for seven songs were completed. A second weekend in November 2011 yielded four more rhythm tracks, and a third weekend in December 2011 added two more rhythm tracks. By this point, it was obvious to all three members that this album was going to be the fourth AFTERLIFE album. Thirteen new songs, nine written by Mike and four written by Jonathan.

In the year 2012, overdubs of guitars, keyboards, mandolin, violin, and a wide variety of percussion instruments and all the vocals were done. In the fall of 2012, mixing began and lasted for a couple of months, until the album was completed just before the end of the year. Then came the task of naming the album...which was not an easy one. Many titles were suggested and rejected by one or more members of the band. Finally Jonathan came up with "Compass Rose", which seemed fitting in many ways. So next came coming up with a concept for the cover of the CD jacket. And finally everything came together and everything was sent off to be manufactured.

AFTERLIFE has always been noted for being somewhat eclectic in style, and "Compass Rose" is no exception. The band has always been about diversity in musical styles. Contained on this new album you will find the familiar sounds of former albums, but also a wide variety of new sounds and styles, both at the same time. Long time fans are sure to be surprised by a lot of what is on this album. New fans will certainly be thrilled as well!

If you're looking for music that isn't in the same cookie-cutter mold as a lot of what you hear on the radio and internet these days...then look no further!
