Description

An extraordinary recording of a spiritual and musical collaboration between Sufi sheikh Ahmed Tijani of Ghana, fellow Sufi sheikhs Kabir and Camille Helminski, and the queen of Ghanaian high life, Asabea Cropper, along with a group of musical friends.

Notes

Ahmed Tijani, a native of Ghana, might have been a rock star, but he chose the path of spirituality. He was trained as a hafiz, having fully memorized the Holy Qur'an, and became an internationally known Sufi shaikh. He never sought a music career, but his meeting with Kabir Helminski in 1996 led to a collaboration that produced this historic recording.
In the Green Mountains of Vermont, a group of musicians from around the world assembled, including West Africa's great vocalist, Asabea Cropper, and her brother, bassist Eugene Cropper. They were assisted by guitarist John Benthal from New York, Vermont percussionist Steve Leicach, vocalist LuAnn Hightower, as well as Kabir and Camille Helminski.

The Tracks:
"Taleal Badru Alayna" is a 1400-year old song, first sung by the women of Medina upon the arrival there of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This version includes original English lyrics by Kabir Helminski.
"Ya Allah" includes a recitation of a poem by the great contemporary Syrian poet Asad Ali, translated by Kabir.
"Balagha Ula" is a traditional West African hymn to the Prophet.
"Allah Bless" is an original song by Ahmed Tijani.
