Notes
When you define Hip-Hop, what do you think of? Years of culture, heritage and history. Thats exactly what Abstrakt Intellekt stands for. Consisting of Mike King and DamoSport, A.I has been a staple of the Detroit hip hop for the past 3 or 4 years. The group is currently preparing their sophomore album, Fear and Loathing in Detroit, for a fall release. Founded in 1999,Abstrakt Intellekt is a group from the outskirts of the Detroit who have paid their dues for some time now.Damian and Mike met through a mutual friend in the Detroit music scene. The chemistry clicked immediately and Damian invited Mike to guest appear on a demo tape that he was cutting. That Sh*t was recorded at Ground Zero Studios (now defunct) in fall of 1999. The demo, which was called "DamoSport Illmatterz 4 bystanderz"which was never officially released, due to production scheduling problems and financial difficulties. So with one project on the shelf, Damian looked to a friend to start over fresh. In February of 2000, Damian and Mike began work on their new group, Abstrakt Intellekt. Mike was a veteran of the music scene, recording for years with Mike E. Clark (I.C.P, Kid Rock, Esham, George Clinton) so after they finished their first track "tha Abstrakt", they immediately brought their new idea to Mike Clark. Mike was extremely impressed with the group and signed them to a one-album deal immediately. Production began in spring of 2000 on Abstrakt Intellekt's debut album, First Contact. Featuring Hush (Geffen Records), Paradime (Beats at Will Records, and Kid Rocks DJ) and other friends in the Detroit music scene, this album was a varitable who's who of Detroit hip-hop. Production was handled by Mike E. Clark, Hush, and DL Jones and DJ Butter, DJ K-Nice, and DJ Magnetic handled the in-studio scratch duties. First Contact finally found release in 2002 on B4 Records to a staggering economy and a slumping music industry. Financial troubles and a lack of a promotional budget really hampered the groups "breakout" record. But due to an extensive "out of the trunk" street campaign, and a very busy live schedule, First Contact was well on its way to 5-6000 copies. Nominated for HipHop album of the Year by The Detroit Hip Hop Awards, and also nominated for Best Live Performance at the 2003 Detroit Rap Awards, A.I held a lengthy live scedule in support of the First Contact album. Having shared the stage with such notables as Paradime, Hush,Tech N9ne, Typical Cats, Cage, King Gordy, DJ Kid Capri, Trick Trick and other heavyweights, A.I is seasoned and poised to take aim out of their local market. A.I is one of those rare groups diverse enough to transcend stereo types and cross over markets. If youre looking for true hip-hop, Abstrakt Intellekt is one group that cannot be missed.
