Notes
while browsing through the aisles of a local bookstore over 15 years ago, aireene randomly pulled "The Land Where the Blues Began" by folklorist Alan Lomax and has since become drawn to stories from the South...delta blues...songs that go way back...deep...songs born of emotion that tell stories of hardship, happiness and of words to pass the time. she picked up a guitar to learn songs by the likes of Robert Johnson, Snooks Eaglin, Etta James, Nina Simone, Odetta, and field recordings by Alan Lomax. these were the tools that laid the grounds for writing her songs.
she later found her fingers at home on the tenor ukulele, and its tonalities complementing her deep and down to earth vocals.
aireene's experience is long and varied, adding to her depth as an artist. she was born in the Philippines and moved to Dumont, NJ at 10 years old, growing up in the third culture: the old country, the new country and the mix of both worlds.
she has sung for groups such as Sol Fire, the Hal Marcus Band, and for the Glide Ensemble of San Francisco, exposing herself to influences in latin/african rhythms, folk and bluegrass pickings and inspirations from gospel music.
her lyrics portray human beings being human, stories from ghosts and the living, and identities of cultures within cultures.
