Notes
A celebration of multiculturalism and creativity, Afro-Musica has delighted audiences since 1992. The Halifax, Nova Scotia based Afro-pop band, founded by Edo-King Matwawana, showcases the cultural diversity of the African continent in music and dance.
The universal appeal of music shines through with this always upbeat and entertaining group of accomplished musicians. Afro-Musica is comprised of seasoned, talented musicians from around the world: Peter Drakes from Guyana, South America on rhythm guitar, Leo Grouse from Halifax on bass guitar, Jerome Thomas from Antigua on drums, Doris from Congo (DRC) on lead guitar and the horn section’s Sean Webber, Matt Myer, and Martha Kelly. The band also features two dynamic dancers: Maggie Sweenie from Sudan, and Hylia Katjinjotjimue, dancing in the traditional East African style. Edo-King is the visionary, lead vocalist, instrumentalist, songwriter and arranger. Born in the Kingdom of Kongo (Northern Angola) and raised in Southern Congo, Edo-King has presented Afro-Musica to an ever-increasing audience.
Afro-Musica has won numerous awards, including six Africa Nova Scotian Music Association (ANSMA) Awards. The band has also received two East Coast Music Association (ECMA) award nominations, and have showcased for the JUNO Awards and Music Nova Scotia (MIANS). The band has produced a total of four recordings since 1996. Their newest CD release, Diaspora Touch, (2006) is already garnering much attention.
Audiences will enjoy Afro-Musica’s repertoire of mostly original music, presented in a multitude of languages. The carefully crafted sound of Afro-Musica combines traditional African roots with a fresh new style, to produce music that moves both spirit and body!
