Description
A tribute to the exotica jazz sounds of Arthur Lyman by his Great Nephew. This album bridges the genres of traditional combo jazz and deep vintage Exotica to pay homage to one of the icons of American mid-century pachelor pad/lounge music.
Notes
A musical tribute to the jazz sounds of Arthur Lyman. This album bridges the gap of combo jazz and vintage Exotica.
The idea for Lei’s of Jazz Vol. 2 has several points of reference for the band. One, is the title. Lei’s of Jazz was an album released late in 1958 by Arthur Lyman. It was hot off the heels of his million selling album Taboo! Second, it was a straight up jazz album. It didn’t include the typical exotic type sounds that Arthur was known for. It was an album of high sophistication and incredible musicianship.
Alika Lyman is a Hawaiian native with a passion for all things jazz and blues. Alika moved to Seattle in 2008 and formed his own trio with other local musicians. His multiple collaborations also included Andy Nazzal of Tiki Joe’s Ocean for which he would play multiple gigs and sessions. Before moving back to Hawaii to further his musical education, he was bitten by the exotica bug. And for Alika, the exotica bug runs deep!
Mark Riddle aka/ Marty Lush has a Latin jazz background as well as an insatiable knowledge of exotica music. Over the years Mark has provided vibes for both the Tikiyaki Orchestra and Tiki Joe’s Ocean, two premier Exotica bands that tour the West Coast. He also commands his own unique outfit with Marty Lush and the Latin Livers. A Latin based lounge act that harkens back to the glamour days of old Las Vegas!! Mark is a true multi-talented entertainer that can sing, play piano, beat the bongos and play a mean vibraphone!
Together Alika Lyman and Mark Riddle have created a soothing new sound of cool jazz guitar infused with the tropical sounds of the vibes. This unique collaboration is a beautiful tribute to a Arthur Lyman and his music and I’m sure Uncle Ata would agree!
