Description
The members of A Little Big Band come from diverse backgrounds of music, theater, visual arts and traditional Native American cultures. An exciting blend of funk music, blending dance, soul, jazz, rock and blues with performance, poetry and spoken word.
Notes
The original concept of "A Little Big Band "... began with Native Alaskan Glass Artist and musician Preston Singletary (Tlingit /Alaskan). Calling upon the collaborative assistance of storyteller/performing artist/actor, Gene Tagaban (Tlingit/Cherokee) and keyboardist/producer Wayne Horvitz, He envisioned a group of performers that could incorporate traditional Alaska Native culture and rhythm with a contemporary sound and inspirational message for all...
Profoundly influenced by Funk and R&B, Singletary felt a need to recruit musicians, and performers whom he admired, to complete this paradigm and extend his musical palette.
Upon meeting Star Nayea (First Nation, Anishnabe) in Santa Fe, he recruited the "powerhouse" female lead vocalist. Eventually she would relocate to the Pacific Northwest, where she now resides.
Star received a 2006 GRAMMY nod for her vocal performance and contribution on "Mountain Song", from the Native American GRAMMY winning recording "Sacred Ground", on Silver Wave records.
Star also received a N.A.M.A. nod that year for Best Contemporary Recording and Best Blues Recording, along with Two Native American Music Awards, "Best Independent Recording" and 2008 "Song Writer Of The Year".
Along with the musical and artistic talent of world renowned visual/performance artist James Luna (Luisano) and the amazing styling's of violinist/actor Swil Kanim (Lummi), Singletary’s vision would “rewrite the rules” by blending a “rootsy”, indigenous funk sound with storytelling and traditional dance. A Little Big Band has since established a foundation for a captivating musical and theatrical experience for all to bear witness... Enjoy~
