Description
Like Lloyd Cole at his best, this is charming folk-rock from London, England telling the stories of ambition halted, love lost and songs sung by a handsome fortysomething wannabe rock star.
Notes
The "follow-up" album to Simplicity by RDS, this is actually a solo effort from UK-based singer-songwriter Richard Ings who has spent the last ten years since that album was released scratching his head and coming up with the songs on this LP (except the one by Bruce Springsteen). The album title is a clever reference to turning 40, which he did just over two years ago, and reflecting on his achievements as a musician. But hopefully you don't need to share his middle-aged angst to enjoy listening to the dozen or so songs included on this release which heavily borrows from his biggest influences (please don't tell their lawyers): The The, Lloyd Cole, Simon and Garfunkel and, of course, Lennon and McCartney.
Recording started underground, in the depths of winter, just after Christmas in 2010. A basement studio in the London borough of Hackney, to be precise. Here all the lead vocals, acoustic guitars, bass and drums were recorded. Then there were a couple of months off. Then recording was resumed, but closer to home in London's Shepherds Bush at a studio once owned by Joe Strummer and now regularly used by Paul Weller and Babyshambles (and their errant vocalist Pete Doherty). Above ground, with lots of light this time, the flutters and sparkle were put in - all that percussion, the harmonies and some quirky instruments like the Stylophone on Hit Me Harder.
Mixed over Christmas 2011, it has taken a while to get released, but now here it is, ready for your approval. Please enjoy in immoderation.
