Description
This is a brilliant disc of three composers - Zemlinsky, Suk, and Arensky - whose names belong along side of the well-known romantics; these extraordinary piano trios deserve a prominent place in anyone’s classical music collection.
Notes
On their website, Trio Voce is described as “three individuals [who] communicate as one voice”, as is deftly demonstrated on this exceptional disc. Each artist is a soloist quality musician and the ensemble’s superb unity conjures up a three-faced mirror.
The magnificent opening of the Zemlinsky is matched with Patricia Tao’s clean, free-breathing technique. The rich, willowy, nimble string lines, made to sound easy by Jasmine Lin (violin) and Marina Hoover (cello) delicately effervesce.
The languid Andante of the Suk allows Hoover to demonstrate her perfect and elegant vibrato, never overt or nervous. The spritely Vivace shows crystal clean ensemble.
The gem on this disc is the Arensky. It opens with a lovely song on violin, imitated in the cello. The Scherzo is a vivacious dance that ends too soon, leaving the listener wanting more. Elegia, the 3rd movement, begins with a poignant song in the strings, unforced, glorious and sensual, followed by tiny, sweet, water drops in the piano accompanied by murmuring strings. The majestic Finale is a joy to experience; played with lacerating precision, warmth, drama, and delicacy. Those unfamiliar with Anton Arensky will do an invaluable service to their classical music collection with the addition of this disc.
This is unquestionably a brilliant disc to enjoy and leave us to eagerly await Trio Voce’s next project.
