Notes
"I have trouble articulating the difference between Nissman and other pianists. She seems willing to go over the cliff, hand and hand with the composer." (classical.net) Barbara Nissman takes the listener on a marvelous journey with her new release. We feel the snow, the stillness and hear the magical sounds and colors of Bartók's Out of Doors. Nissman captures the bittersweet quality that underlies Schubert's beautiful melodies in his Four Impromptus, Op. 90. A Chopin Nocturne describes a beautiful moonlit evening and prepares us to travel to the darker regions of Rachmaninoff's Russian soul with several of his Preludes and Etudes. Nissman can go to the dark places but always makes sure to bring us back into the light. Listen to the Russian cathedral bells of Rachmaninoff's well known C# minor Prelude. She connects with the composers and connects their souls with the listener. Nissman offers three encores- a funny Rondo by Hummel, a contemporary of Beethoven, a delightful Mendelssohn Scherzo, transcribed by Rachmaninoff and the charming Gavotte from Prokofiev's Classical Symphony. She seems to "know" these composers intimately and delights in sharing their passion for the piano with all of us.
