Description

This extraordinary music is rooted in the jazz style of improvisation, with the unique characteristic of beautiful melodies, haunting harmonies and groove-oriented rhythms that appeal to a wide range of music enthusiasts.

Notes

"The Spirit w/in" is my third record and features music from many sources. Jimmy Haslip and I had just placed a song called "Polo" on Luis Conte's "Black Forest" record and also a song called "Dark Horses" on a "Yellowjackets" record called "The Spin". We were a good writing team at the time and I always cherish those days with Jimmy.
Jimmy and I had a few more tunes to find homes for and the group Secret 9 I was playing in had a record deal that fell through so I decided to put out my own record with music from these sources and others.
A quartet group I was playing in was at Stagg Street Studios in Van Nuys. That group had Gary Denton (owner) on drums, Albert von Seggern on woodwinds, and Bob Feldman on bass. We use to get together regularly and try to record our songs
at the studio during off hours. This group is featured on "Always When It Rains" and "Wolf 359".
The group Secret 9 had Mark Hatch on trumpet and EVI, Casey Scheuerell on drums and Larry Steen on bass. This group is featured on "Unwritten Law" and "If You Were Here"(bass player is Chazz Frictel).
The song "The Spirit Within" also called "Black Marble" originally, "Marina" and "The Transformer" were all written by Jimmy and I and recorded at my studio (Plus Shut-Up studios).
The group Riding Nomad has Michael Barsimanto on drums and Bill Urmson on bass and is featured on "In Memory Of Lace".
The song "Way Station" was recorded at my studio with just me and Albert von Seggern on woodwinds and the song "Old Trees" was just me with the guitar synth.
The music came from many places but the final result when it was all put together I feel is as one. I hope you enjoy the record and thanks for listening. Barry
