Description
Haunting, Dark Cinematic Music - This is a Gothic Horror Symphony; musical scores of darkness grandiose, and a tale of the macabre...
Notes
The Night Keep is the newest horror production from J. Daniel Edenfield, the writer and head of the band Throne of Anguish, and Sinnestar.
The actual creation of The Night Keep was a slow sequence of events that have begun gaining in frequency until this was the most logical step that could be made. To effectively describe the beginning of The Night Keep, one must start with Daniel's primary band, Throne of Anguish, if only briefly.
The main genre of Throne of Anguish has always been in the metal genre, whether violent death metal, or industrial, even funeral doom. In 2012, Throne released Shade of Night, Daniel's first foray into classical dark ambient music. The album received immediate attention from several notable artists in the genre (namely Midnight Syndicate). In 2013, Throne released yet another classical dark ambient album, "A Tale of Shadows", which took the concepts used in "Shade..." and expounded upon them, utilizing scripted narrations and voice acting. The album received critical acclaim, and therein became the small quandary - what to do? Throne of Anguish subsequently released their latest album, symphonic death metal, which is also garnering its own praise. During this time, Fangoria Magazine signed Throne of Anguish to its Musick Label, releasing an exclusive album through its webstore. While monumental for Throne of Anguish, Daniel felt that fans of the death metal and heavier music would be confused at some of the material, perhaps even disappointed. As a means to be both fair to fans of all styles of his music, as well as continuing to explore classical compositions and the horror genre, Daniel felt the need to create a second project.
Thus was born The Night Keep - the same stylings of Throne of Anguish, yet with its sole focus on the horror and cinematic elements of music. While funneling his cinematic music toward The Night Keep, Daniel is now able to use The Night Keep as not only a portal for music, but also other horror projects which are in the works, such as a graphic novel and future films.
In Musicka is the first release for The Night Keep, and it continues the same styles set forth in "A Tale of Shadows" - in presentation, as well as in story, setting, and concept. It follows in the same vein, yet only enhances the elements. Where "A Tale of Shadows" was more fantasy-oriented with it's sword and sorcery songs, In Musicka evokes moods of the Baroque movement, with harpsichords, and even more symphonies - all to paint a picture of a steampunk fantasy.
In Musicka is the story of a musician named Claude who had to leave the symphony due to his son's illness. Claude's friend, Pietr comes to visit one day with a guest, Lord Malensteadt. Lord Malensteadt explains the reason for the visit - he has a friend in much the same situation as Claude: a father with an infirm child, and his mission to find a cure. A recording is played, though horribly damaged, but with certain lines discerned, Claude and Malensteadt set out for Grimveil Sanatorium, accompanied by two coachmen, on a quest to discover what became of the Doctor, as well as to find a possible cure. What they find is terror as the story unfolds with a slow progression, leading up to the horrifying climax.
In Musicka is the first release in what will only be many more albums of dark fantasy, haunting tales of the macabre, and even more dark, cinematic music.
