Description
Sonic Sketches is an hour-long work for piano and electronics that was created as a sound installation for art gallery spaces. It is a work very much representative of the moment in which it was initially composed.
Notes
This work is part of the continued exploration into “moment composing”, and the potential limits of post-moment control. Whose volition, if anyone’s, should take precedence: the composer at the time of creation, or the composer who adjusts that creation afterwards? A work always has precision and exactitude, at any time; its “completion” depends upon the perspective and recognition ability of the composer. The question is, how do we balance between allowing a work to retain its definition as created in a particular moment, with allowing the perspective of other, future moments to reshape those original ideas?
Sonic Sketches is an hour-long work for piano and electronics that was created as a sound installation for art gallery spaces. It is a work very much representative of the moment in which it was initially composed. The traditional definition of a sketch leads us to believe that it is simply a prelude to something else down the road, something further developed. This work challenges that idea, in some sense, by embracing the idea that the sketch is the work itself.
