Description
A raw, deeply personal album of alt folk by a well-traveled singer-songwriter who remains forever engaged with the echoes and ethos of his small town roots while reflecting on the profound roles of grandson, father, husband, son-in-law and friend.
Notes
A raw, deeply personal album of alternative folk by a well-traveled singer-songwriter ⎼ reflecting on the profound roles of grandson, father, husband, son-in-law and friend, while still forever engaged with the echoes and ethos of small town roots.
Sink Or Swim is Bill Bonnell’s fifth release of new music, and this album charts a lifetime’s journey with a relentless, compelling honesty. As performer and writer, Bonnell’s daring vocals – at times gritty, at times sweet -- have a persuasive authenticity. One of Bonnell’s primary intentions was to invest his recording sessions with the urgency and immediacy of a live performance, which he accomplished by rushing to the studio shortly after each of the songs was written. The mix you hear is purely acoustic, elegantly produced, and rich with a range of emotions.
The album’s journey begins as the son of a Geneva, New York salesman who played jazz drum on the weekends. One tribute to his father’s moonlighting is Bonnell’s percussive guitar, which uniquely and assertively characterizes tone and rhythm across a variety of melodies. These songs also take their cues from growing up in Central New York – such as the region’s signature beer and wine (produced by the Genesee Brewing Company and flavorful Riesling grapes); the area’s reverence for blue-collar steadiness; and the romance of lakeside summers. It is also about coping and moving on after loss. 24-7-365 was composed while witnessing a friend grab hold of life in death’s shadow. There’s also a worthy homage to a pop classic that described the lasting pull of one’s small town birthplace.
The album cover of Sink or Swim shows the shoreline of Sylvan Beach, on Oneida Lake. It’s one of Bonnell’s lasting images of what will forever be home – and of the place which will always anchor his restless creativity … no matter how far he travels.
