Description

Mix yourself a cocktail of indie-rock, disco and a dash electro, let the ice-cubes of catchy melodies melt for perfection and you got yourself a Jim Protector.

Notes

The Norwegian midwinter of 2001 was extremely cold, but it gave Alex and Jarle time to write and record the askew yet melodious music of Jim Protector, using the family-computer, the worlds lousiest guitar and whatever other instruments or tools at hand. The outcome was the 7-inch ”Half Finished / Half Begun”, released the following year. Two years later, spread between cities and continents for a while, songs for the follow-up EP ”Jim Protectors guide to self-pity” was recorded and engineered by Thomas Ruud from the Norwegian rock-act Mohammed. Jim Protector had gone from a lo-fi duo to a indie-rock trio. Both EPs were praised with dazzling reviews in some of Norway’s most profiled music-zines. Two years after its making, the music video from “Jim Protector´s guide to self-pity” is part of Norway´s biggest video-voting service for national TV in Norway.

The young fellows of Jim Protector strengthened by the drummer Andreas and the energetic guitar-player Stein Ove, are now gathered in the old Viking-city of Trondheim, where they also attend studies. A refurnished workmen´s shed in a closed down smelting-plant serves as a practice-room and studio. Now as a four-piece, Jim Protector has on several occasions proven to be a most competent and entertaining live-act, at one time they made a man with polio raise his crutches to the air and start dancing.

What is Jim Protector all about? If you take the indie-rock genre, i.e. guitarbased music with a touch of beautiful melodies, add elements of casio-pop, lo-fi and white noise, well, then you kinda get the idea. Although Jim Protector has been trough a slow change of style, they sound amazingly like themselves. Pump-organs, trumpets, casio-beats, Theremin and saz are not unfamiliar to Jim Protectors dark pop-universe, and they use those instruments and whatever they can get their little hands on to go exploring into their little musical world. You might want to compare it with the likings of Arab Strap, Motorpsycho, Granddaddy, Neutral Milk Hotel, Yo La Tengo, Dinosaur Jr. or the cure. Or you just might want to compare it with something else.

Jim Protector has been collaborating with Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, R.E.M., Big Star) to mix and refine the Jim Protector sound for their debut album titled “Shields Down”. A most charming cut with lo-fi legend Jad Fair (Half Japanese, Teenage Fanclub, Yo La Tengo++) is also included.
