Description
Original concept album from a band that has graced the world with powerful song ballads of historic interest. Where Celtic & Americana Folk Music meet in a very progressive style that is the corner stone of this bands 24 years of performance!
Notes
The Black Irish Band present their latest work, "This Summer". This new 24th release is a piece of musical art that took their entire lifetimes to create, for it is from the influences of youth. Original & Traditional, the Black Irish Band delivers a concept album based on the music of their childhood, and that of their parents. In the late 1950s the music of Bill Haley, The Kingston trio, and Dave Brubeck was big stuff in the Southern California Songbook. Down the street where songwriter Patrick grew up (Hawthorne, California), the Wilson Brothers (Beach Boys) were also listening to the same music. Folk Music and Jazz standards were the craze of those times and shared by all.
Besides the music influences, it was the very times the Black Irish Band boys were growing up. The Television shows, the summer vacations, and the smooth summer wind that made youth so joyous in these times. The long trips in a 1962 Chevy Impala station wagon inspired many of the songs written my band member Patrick Karnahan. Patrick also has included a few story ballads about some of his childhood heroes like Jack London and flyer Frank Luke.
What makes this recording so special is the blend of Celtic instrumentation with a truly Americana Folk/ rock sound. On the track, "This Summer", you can clearly hear the sound of the Beach boys style, but mixed with the traditional instruments of the Black Irish Band. Many of the songs feature the hard-driving Ukulele blended with the Melodeon. Because of the folk blending of instruments in each song there seems to be a very happy uplifting quality to each recording. As a special treat, songwriter Patrick Karnahan threw in a few solo features for the Tenor Sax. Song, "Track Five", was written in 5/4 time as a tribute to the late Dave Brubeck and features long time band friend Rod Harris on Sax.
If you just want to sit back and relax with a tall one, put this CD in the player and take a journey back to the youth that has passed us all. Smile, think back, cry, but remember the great joy we once had from our childhood--ENJOY!!

Two words come to mind as I listen to, "This Summer - A Musical Journey of Our Youth", the 24th and newest CD by the Black Irish Band. It is unique and outstanding! While the songs are not your typical Celtic songs, they are all played with a mixture of your traditional Celtic instruments.
The title song, "This Summer..." was written by band member, Patrick Michael Karnahan. It is a delightful song talking about hitting the highway, swimming, parties with friends and going home again! My personal favorite is "I was Davy Crockett", a wonderful song about "real" men being heroes and not some made up character by the corporate world. Singer, James Nelson, does an incredible version of "Yodel Your Blues Away", and I was impressed by the trumpet playing of Richard Restivo and Patrick Karnahan in "Tijuana
Breakdown - (Tijuana Brass Meets the Chieftains)".
"This Summer...." truly is a classic! This album is the perfect gift for anyone including yourself. Well done Black Irish Band...I was mezmerized by your journey's!
