Notes
The longest symphony on this CD is one minute, the shortest just over 8 seconds. In the time it takes an orchestra to tune up you can pack in two or three complete sound-bite symphonies, AND acquire the same sense of cultural superiority that two tedious hours would give you at Symphony Hall.

Ranging in style from symphonic to heavy metal, from Bob Dylan to string quartet to African rhythms, these miniature masterpieces cover the entire range of human experience. They are a satire of the term symphony, usually describing a tedious affair at an archaic ritual gathering. But they are also an attempt to define the shortest duration in which a complete musical idea can be conveyed, without words!, not as an abstract exercise but as a reflection of our fractured attention-deprived mental landscape, our ADD Zeitgeist.
No acoustic instruments were used in these symphonies, though some may sound like it. A “sampled orchestra” may not seem as classy as the kind played by musicians dressing up in 18th century costumes, but it can be just as expressive, and is far more representative of our times. Consider that Beethoven did not use Renaissance crumhorns and lutes to capture the spirit of his times in his symphonies.
From a composer’s point of view though the best thing about a virtual orchestra is not having to hire cantankerous and unreliable live musicians. Computer samples don’t take coffee breaks.
