Galileo's Telescope

I have always loved to look at the stars. I sometimes pretended I was Galileo, but I didn’t know anything about him. Reading David Wootton’s inspiring book “Galileo: Watcher of the Skies” showed me Galileo and his methods, theories, colleagues and times; which for me turned into music! I began to read more about Aristotle, Copernicus and Newton and began to understand the lineage of minds that are continuing to take us on our journey to understanding the Cosmos.

2 Aristotle's Eternal Mechanical Universe

The heavens are composed of 55 concentric, crystalline spheres to which the celestial bodies are attached with the Earth at the center.

3 Copernicus' Rotating Circling Universe

The Sun is the center of the Solar System. The Earth rotates every 24 hours. The earth is simply another heavenly body circling the sun. In his time, you could be burned to death for such thoughts!

4 Newton's Gravity Rotates the Universe

The Three Laws of Motion explain the power of gravity which goes higher than the apple tree! It is the power to move the Universe.

5 A Starry Messenger

“Medicea Siderea” (Galileo calls them “The Medici Stars”)

Galileo said, "I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night." By this I think he meant, besides fear of the night and the unknown, fear of the forces of ignorance and those people afraid to learn about the magnificence of our universe, which he had to fight with every one of his discoveries.
