Description
Crunchy Sweet Garageadelic Rock In The Husker/'Mats/Cheap Trick tradition.
Notes
...BROTHER EYE is a dynamic rock band from New Hope, Pennsylvania-the sleepy river town populated by drag queens, dog boys, Buddhist monks, and used car salesmen. Option called BROTHER EYE a "stripped down, garage-band version of The Cure", but the band also draws inspiration from artists like Cheap Trick, Husker Du, and Warren Zevon.
BROTHER EYE is a modern-day 'pop' group in the best sense of the word. They write songs. Critic Jonathan Takiff said that BROTHER EYE "will hook you with catchy tunes and compellingly weird visions." Here's what happened: Dwight and Tony met in high school, began cutting class and jamming to Julian Cope records, watching The 700 Club and getting loaded. Original songs soon followed, and after several fits and starts they found ace drummer Bobby with the aid of legendary Buzzcock Steve Garvey (then the band's manager). Finally a cohesive and powerful unit, the band made the critically acclaimed record SOAPDISH ANTENNAE with producer Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips/Mercury Rev/Weezer). Next came their classic Holiday single (BLACK CHRISTMAS), and a hard-to-find second album (RADIO CONTROLLED DRUGS) that made some noise in the UK. Then the troubles began...
But the legal and medical clouds eventually lifted, and BROTHER EYE released the Fridmann-produced ALL THE PRETTY GIRLS GET THE TRIANGLE, refining their blend of melodic crunch and future-rock atmospherics with dizzying results. This album featured mysterious new member Leslie St. Ives on guitar. Standout cuts included the bittersweet rocker "Inger Lorre", the ironic, Cars-y drone of "I Like Drugs", and the ode to their hometown's oldest drag queen, "Mother Was A Sergeant".
In August 2012 BROTHER EYE released their fourth LP, EMOTIONAL FINGERS on Boston's Strange Pony record label. The disc, produced by Philly scene stalwart Brian McTear (Sharon Van Etten, Dr. Dog) shows a mature, confident band relying more on musical interplay than studio trickery. From the epic wall-of-sound opener about misspent youth (“Dry Summer”) to the bluesy stomp of “I Won’t” – EMOTIONAL FINGERS is Brother Eye’s most diverse, accomplished album to date. Excelsior!
