Description

Original Solo Piano music with a unique style that draws from jazz greats like Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, French impressionists like Satie and Messian, and soundtrack composers like Thomas Newman and Philip Glass

Notes

This recording is close to the culmination of a year of "sittings" at the piano, where I simply sat at the keyboard the way one might sit for a meditation and instead of focusing on breath or a mantra I focused on harmonic motion . I say "close to the culmination" because I'm wanting to get these out before Christmas raw, in a collectors edition run of 100 cd's before sending them to a mastering engineer to optimize and balance the levels of each track. I hope to do that next year and include a few more and possibly different "sittings".

Unlike the first CD in this series "Falling Awake" where I recorded some tracks on my Steinway Grand piano and some on a Yamaha Clavinova all the tracks on this CD were recorded on the Yamaha Clavinova Grand. The Clavinova is a hybrid piano which combines the hammers and string action of the traditional grand piano with digital technology. As a classically trained pianist my first forays into recording with digital piano reproduction felt sacrilegious but as I continue to work with the latest advances in true modeling and sampled pianos (on this recording I'm using a mixture of Modart's "Pianoteq" and Synthogy's "Ivory" (German Concert Grand and Bosendorfer) I'm convinced that we are in a transition period similar to early 1700's with the introduction of the pianoforte instrument at the height of composition for the harpsichord.

Acknowledgements: I'd like to thank the 2 Charles's: Charles Read for his impeccable design sense and creativity and Charles Shanok, who has patiently allowed me access to his Yamaha piano, fed me expressos and encouragement and last and most importantly my partner, Julie Hedrick, whose new series of paintings exploring the color green has inspired this collection of pieces.
