Patrick Brayer is one of the founding fathers of modern day hard scrabble lyricism. His works come rich with encyclopedic imagery, painted within songs peopled with flamboyantly life-worn characters, revealing an underside of psychological resonance.
Alison Krauss, Alan Jackson, Ben Harper, Robert Plant, John Doe, The Cox Family, and Stuart Duncan have all been to the prolific and time honored well known as Patrick Brayer. Brayer's songs symbolically echo with the hardwood dancehall floors of Hank Williams, steel guitar drenched between the lines, to even include the bird-nest of imagery often found in great Spanish poets like Pablo Neruda. He gives us sonically every aspect of his education and history, from Slovenian forefathers, the peoples of his Appalachian mother, and ending up in the hard scrabble steel mills, egg ranches, and the creosote catholic upbringing of the 1958 Fontana, California desert foothills. He manages somehow to show, in the short breath's length of a song, a reverence for the loves and losses of life without the gushing gnaw of pride's hovering absolutes. Brayer was once quoted as saying that, "My grandest dream might well be to just continue to write what i consider sound cinema, using just a bar napkin and a pencil as film stock, and penning a work finally so right and true that it would make Carnegie Hall indistinguishable from Tijuana"
