Recorded in St Anna, Herschbach, Germany on the 100 year old Horn organ, this album features classic jazz and blues arranged for the church organ.
Notes
Jazz? On a church organ? Surely not. The organ world is old and stuffy – not cool and jazzy – how does that work?
Sound weird to you? Historically speaking, the pipe organ was not initially a religious instrument but actually started out as an instrument in theatres and public places providing musical accompaniment to theatrical works. The church connection came a lot later!
So why not play a bit of jazz and fun music on these instruments? They are after all a kind of one-man-band or orchestra. Some of the pipes are even voiced to sound just like orchestral instruments.
Don’t forget, organists throughout the ages have been improvisers, just like jazz musicians. Link the two worlds and you’ve got something different! Jazz works perfectly on the organ.
