It’s been seven long years since Cyndi Boste’s last album, the critically lauded Foothill Dandy. Seven long years of heartache and loss, self doubt and despair. But thankfully, just as the world was warming, Cyndi’s heart was thawing and her creative juices started to simmer. 2013 sees her cookin’.

There was a time when many, especially Cyndi herself, thought she might not emerge from the wreckage of a long term relationship. Throw in the death of a close friend, a world in turmoil, the daily grind and, all but the terminally resilient would have, like Cyndi, locked the door, took the phone off the hook and climbed under the bed covers.

But like all great artists, the black coal of life fuelled the crucible of creation and Cyndi started writing again. Her creations, not just songs, but gems. “I just wanted to let people know where I was at. Whilst I probably would have wished to avoid the pain that inspired some of the songs, as an artist, I’m probably better for it.” admits Boste. With the help of collaborator and friend Jeremy Edwards and his Dust Radio Band, the raw stones that she mined from her rich seam of experience have been expertly cut and polished. Each facet reflecting the world that inspired them with stunning perfection.

Being AWOL from the music industry for any length of time is a serious transgression that attracts its own special set of penalties. You run the real risk of becoming invisible. As Cyndi was well aware, digital music had evolved significantly whilst she was away and being a musician in the second decade of the second millennium brought its own challenges and opportunities. Cyndi quickly seized on the crowd funding site, Pozzible, as a vehicle to fund the recording of the album. Cyndi’s only concern was, would her fans and admirers have moved on? Sixty days and $18,000 later the verdict was in; Cyndi Boste is back in business.

“It was a bit scary and exhilarating at the same time, but I had to just keep believing in the music I make” says Cyndi. “The contributions started solidly, but came home in a rush. I couldn’t be happier” she says. “I hope I have repaid the faith.” The concern would seem pointless just seconds after the CD slides into the player. Nowadays is a triumph and destined to sell well both in Australia and internationally.

“I’m really excited about the new album.” says Boste in her typical understated way. “Dare I say it is my best yet.” Undoubtedly, but time may prove it to be her most important. “Nowadays is positive reaffirmation of the journey thus far.” Cyndi concludes definitively.

Nowadays, is life as it is lived, or at least should be; dimensional, nuanced, reflective, optimistic, opinionated and passionate. It is also Cyndi Boste at her most accessible. The new album was born in the pain of yesterday and inspired by the hope for tomorrow, but most importantly Nowadays is an album for here and now.
