The Sibylline Oracles Cantata takes its title and text from a sixth-century AD Greek work considered to be spurious Old Testament prophecy. The text comes from my own translation, using the edition Die Oracula Sibyllina in Die Grieschischen Christlichen Schriftsteller der Estern Jahrhunderte, J.C. Hinrichs’sche, Leipzig, 1902 (and also making good use of the 1890 translation by Milton S. Terry). The work comprises seven sections excerpted from Book Three of the Sibylline Oracles. Transliterated Greek from the original text is used in three of the sections.
The Sibylline Oracles Cantata was first composed in 1995 and completely rewritten in 2000. The all-female voicing of the 2000 version has been changed to mixed voices (choir and soloists) for the 2013 compilation.
This work has been created for live voice and pre-recorded electronics. For this recording, all voices are synthesized by VocalWriter software. Music and text translation/adaptation by Cynthia Sternau. Duration 24 min.
My music is created for live voice and pre-recorded electronics, or electronics only, and is not intended for performance by acoustic instruments. There are 12 short electronic operas, several choral works, and an art song cycle, in addition to electronic instrumental cycles. I have been composing electronic music now for almost 20 years, using a variety of hardware and software synthesizers, keyboards, and a wind controller. Although trained on piano and violin in the classical tradition, I'm self-taught as a composer and electronic musician. All opera libretti are written by me, inspired and adapted from classical and Near Eastern sources, among others. All music is created and performed by me.
