Downpours Of Disapproval - Liner Notes
=================================

1. Resurrection (downpour of disapproval on giving up in life):
The last few years haven’t been the easiest for Crimson Falls. Going from a nice label promising us to be rising, but never backing up their words, to a lot of cancelled opportunities & a series of line-up changes. After our original drummer’s departure for instance we played shows with four different drummers. Every time we had to start over, building up a new set from scratch, always new delays in the song-writing for a new album… And still, there was never any hesitation, we always kept going, we always knew the new cd would get there. So here it is; enjoy. We wrote it through good and bad, but never gave up. This way the band is a nice metaphor for our personal lives. Life ain’t always easy, we make mistakes, lose track, take the wrong turn at the crossroads & the worst things in life come free to us. But this doesn’t mean we give up. We keep going. Believe in yourself and trust in those who truly stand by you. And through good and bad you can always find strength in music. Lots of bands and artists influenced this song: Blood For Blood, Winds Of Plague, Emmure, Eminem, Johnny Cash… Or the way Madball used to put it: “Life’s hard, a struggle sometimes. But in the end I’ll get what’s mine.” (taken from ‘Pride’) That’s how it is.

2. Downpours Of Disapproval (the all comprehensive downpour of disapproval):
Crimson Falls means a lot to us. In this band we find different aspects of life that are important to us. We can let our creativity flow, hang out and have fun with friends, go out and enjoy the shows we play, reach goals we want to achieve… But that’s not all, Crimson Falls is also a way to express ourselves and therefore the lyrics to our songs have always been an important part of this band. Crimson Falls has always proclaimed a positive message of freedom, self-confidence and following your dreams, while other songs put the finger on the pulse of our modern society and its excesses. On this cd it’s no different. Every single song on ‘Downpours Of Disapproval’ expresses something that affects us personally, something that rouses our indignation or something that just fuckin’ pisses us off. Every single song is a downpour of disapproval, a personal outlet of emotions, a statement on topical social issues, an expression of values that are important in our lives. Downpours Of Disapproval is the main theme throughout this cd. Downpours Of Disapproval is what we’ve got to say. Downpours Of Disapproval coming down on you.

3. How Much Does Life Weigh? (downpour of disapproval on letting go off your loved ones):
‘How Much Does Life Weigh?’ was written after seeing ‘21 Grams’, a brilliant movie shot by Alejandro González in 2004; starring Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Naomi Watts as the main characters. Their lives come together after a strange car accident. 21 Grams captures a lot of questions concerning life and death. How do you go on when your loved ones pass away? How does a mother go on after losing her husband and children? Is there a way to go on after such a tragedy? But also; how strange is it that different lives can meet each other at the same crossroads? And what holds these 21 grams we lose at the exact moment of our death? How much does life weigh?

4. Stillborn (downpour of disapproval on disrespect):
When I was 16 years old and went to my first hardcore shows I heard a lot of bands talk about important values such as respect & loyalty. At the time I understood the words but not their true meaning. Through the years these values have gotten more and more important to me & I catch myself often using the word ‘respect’ now myself while writing lyrics & comments. Treating others with respect & consideration has become an important guideline to live my life by. It’s the way I want to get treated by others, so that’s how I have to treat my peers. Remember there’s more in life than just yourself, so don’t be too self-centered and consider how your actions affect others. Not getting this respect and consideration can be ruining, even devastating. That’s exactly what ‘Stillborn’ is about.

5. Testify (downpour of disapproval on bullying, trolling, harassments…):
Testify is our take on dubstep. Although this style of music might not have too much in common with metal/hardcore at first glance, we still think it’s a very modern, cool and influential music genre that has some similarities with our core style. Blending these styles is what we tried to do in ‘Testify’, love it or hate it. Call it dubcore or deathstep, mosh or dance, just keep your mind open. Lyrically this song was written after reading too many articles about bullying, trolling and other harassments getting out of hand, especially among kids at school or in their social life. The last decade social media have made it easier to harass and bring this bullshit in someone’s living room. When these harassments go so far that young and talented teenagers commit suicide it’s clear we have to put a stop to this. There are no excuses for disturbing and ruining other lives so quit that shit.

6. Trapped (downpour of disapproval on exploitation):
On 5 August 2010, 33 miners got trapped in the San José mine; a copper and gold mine in the North of Chile. They got imprisoned after a landslide in the mine, trapped in a shelter 612 metres underground. A rescue mission never seen before was started. The rescue workers could only establish contact with them after 2 weeks of drilling through the earth with their machines. “Estamos bien en el rafugio – los 33” was the message coming from the womb of the Earth. The following weeks two more shafts were drilled to reach the miners, while their families stayed above ground at the entrance of the mine in the Camp of Hope; Campamento Esperanza. 69 days later, on 13 October 2010, the first rescued miner finally saw the light of day again. One by one they were brought back to the soil with a special high-tech capsule. Finally they saw their loved ones again. Following this mining disaster, the worn out San José mine was closed, like several other insecure mines in Chile. A few days after the rescue of the Chilean miners; 26 miners died after an explosion in a mine in China. The Chinese mining industry is the most dangerous worldwide. In 2009, 2600 miners died in one of the many Chinese mines. The gigantic hunger for raw materials leads to a careless exploitation of natural resources and a shameless exploitation of the workers. The companies are out for the highest profits with no attention to the well-being of the miners. The story of the Chilean miners not only shows that the work circumstances in some parts of the world are still degrading and extremely dangerous, but also that human beings don’t give up and fight for their lives. The miners lived in extreme and hopeless circumstances for months, but their struggle for life brought them back above ground. Alive.

7. Vengeance Is Mine (downpour of disapproval on people taking advantage of you):
There will always be people in your life who try to take advantage of you, who try to use you or who don’t treat you with the respect you deserve. In the past I could take a lot of that shit, always tried to see things in perspective, go on & just swallow it. But if things don’t change for the better, eventually it’s there, the point of no return, the final drop. You ask yourself what’s wrong with a little honesty, with loyalty or with just being straight-forward? Why is dishonesty all around? Why does it pay to be false and fake? I think I’ve gotten too old to take any more of this crap. Don’t let anyone fuck with you. Don’t let anyone take advantage of you. Don’t let anyone run over you. Fight the injustice done to you. Keep your life in your own hands, stay in control and stand up for who you are, what you believe in and what you have achieved. That will be your revenge, fuck ‘em all.

8. Culture Of Cancellations (downpour of disapproval on a metal/hardcore scene that doesn’t care):
Belgium has always had a strong metal & hardcore scene. Consisting not only of killer bands, but also heaps of opportunities. Every kid has the possibility to start a band and get on stage or to set up a show at their local youth club. The opportunities are there to get involved. Like every scene ours knows its highs and lows as well. The current low might not be something to worry about too much, but still there’s something that pisses me off and that’s the ease with which bands and organizers cancel shows nowadays. No one seems to care if a band cancels its appearance or if an organizer cancels his show. I see this as a lack of respect and dedication. A lack of respect from bands towards the organizers who do everything to set up a decent and well-promoted show. A lack of respect from bands towards their audience. If the band itself doesn’t care about playing, why should the crowd care? A lack of respect from the cancelling organizer towards the bands he booked. Ever thought of the fact we took time off work to play your show? Or that we invested a lot of money for decent gear and to keep it in check? Or drove hours to get to your show for which you did shit to promote it; leaving us with an empty venue? This lack of dedication will kill our scene in the end. If you get involved in the scene, in a band, as an organizer, with your e-zine or whatever… take your fuckin’ responsibility, show some dedication and show respect to the other people in the scene by not letting them down. I’m not saying Crimson Falls will never cancel a show. One day a valid reason will come along, forcing us to step out, shit happens. But today we’re 250 shows far and we’ve cancelled zero. How about that as an example; it makes us fuckin’ proud. Unfortunately not only bands and organizers lose dedication; the audience often drops out as well, making it hard to attract a decent crowd on local shows from time to time. Why? That’s hard to say… too many bands, too many shows, too little promotion, filthy venues, all big US bands playing in our country making it hard to ‘compete’… I guess all these factors add up. Our scene got so strong in the past that we all got spoiled. But our local scene knows its own pearls that also deserve your support. I’ll give you a few names: In-Quest, Spoil Engine, The End Of All Reason, Leng’Tche, Thurisaz… The audience, you, can make our local underground scene stronger again by showing up at gigs, showing dedication, showing support towards bands… Do it. Represent.

9. The Generation Chasm (downpour of disapproval on changing opportunities offered to different generations):
I doubted writing this song, as the subject might seem trivial. Certainly if we look at the real injustice in this world like poverty, the third world, homeless people & child abuse; to name just a few. So we have to see this in perspective. Nag about the size of our house when we should be happy to have a roof above our heads. But still, living my life in the (rich) western world, this song does deal with an important social problem. A problem I’m faced with in my own personal life. An inequality that infuriates me every single time I think about it. Different generations facing unequal futures, not getting the same chances. My generation wants the same, our own house, our own home, a good and secure job, a safe retirement and some spare time to enjoy with our family and friends. And maybe some time to tackle the real problems on this planet…

10. Le Coup De Grâce (downpour of disapproval on senseless violence):
During the 1980’s a criminal gang committed more than 50 violent hold-ups on heavily armed money transports of the Belgian postal and banking institutions. They left at least 3 deaths, two in Verviers (1985) and one in GrandBigard (1989). Face of the gang was Patrick Haemers, Le Grand Blond, a charming gangster with star air. Together with his partners-in-crime Philippe Lacroix, Thierry Smaers & later on Basri Bajrami, he became a force to reckon with, feared and renowned, dominating the Belgian news headlines. Haemers was Belgium’s most wanted; public enemy number 1. International fame came after they kidnapped Belgium’s ex-prime minister Paul Vandenboeynants. Together with his wife Denise Tyack and his son Kevin, Haemers lived a life on the run which ended with his arrest in Rio, Brazil on 27.05.1989. Four years later Haemers committed suicide in his prison cell. His story shows that senseless violence is of all times and comes in different forms and therefore is a continued inspiration to Crimson Falls. The idea to write this song was born after watching the first episode of ‘De Bende Haemers’, a documentary about the life of Patrick Haemers, shot by Peter Boeckx. Further inspiration came from both the documentary as well as the book ‘My Life With Patrick Haemers’ by Denise Tyack and Peter Boeckx. Consequently special thanks for this inspiration and his help with the further completion of this song goes out to Peter Boeckx.

11. Show Me Your Hands That Strangled My Child (downpour of disapproval on child abuse):
Marc Dutroux, Michel Fourniret, Abdallah Ait-Oud, Kim De Gelder, Wolfgang Priklopil, Josef Fritzl, Michel Stockx…. All of them are child molesters. They hurt the most innocent human beings, little ones who can’t defend themselves. Some of them raped kids and left them (for) dead afterwards. Others caged them & kept injuring and molesting their victims for months or even years. Incest or someone else’s children, for some of these predators it’s all the same. Or like Kim De Gelder; just randomly striking at kids with a knife in a daynursery. How pathetic can you be? Their crimes are the lowest of the low. They’re fuckin’ cowards. Lock them up for half an hour with these children’s parents and see what’s left of the power they like to exert or the sick sexual urge they can’t suppress. No excuses, no extenuating circumstances, no remorse…
