Notes
The Cumberland Trio, consisting of Andy Garverick, Jerre Haskew, Tom Kilpatrick, along with bassist and comedian Jim Shuptine, was a prominent folk music group in the 1960s folk era who appeared on ABC-TV's Hootenanny prime time Saturday night show 3 times, won the National Collegiate Folk Festival, played the Grand Ole Opry and performed at numerous college & folk club concerts across the USA. The Trio broke up in late 1965 because of the British Invasion by the Beatles, Stones and other bands.
The origianl group reunited THIRTY-SEVEN years later in 2000 with the release of this original 1964 RCA album, brilliantly produced by the legendary Chet Atkins and remastered to CD by Steve Wallace of CWSMultiMedia.com, The Cumberland Trio has since recorded two live reunion concerts {2001 & 2004 both available right here on CDBaby on both DVD (2004) and 2 Disc CD (2001 & 2004)} and is performing concerts at great music halls & major multi-genre music festivals across the USA.
Their music is being played on major NPR/ Americana/ Bluegrass/ Folk music radio stations across the USA and in Europe. PBS broadcasted the Trio's 2004 reunion concert DVD within Tennessee in December of 2005, with plans to syndicate it to all other PBS affiliate stations throughout the USA in 2006-2007.
The Trio's recordings have received praise from such folk era icons as Bob Shane of The Kingston Trio, Mike Kirkland of The Brothers Four and Roger McGuinn of The Byrds. Shane is quoted as saying, "This is a MUST recording for any folk music fan, as these guys were/are as good as anybody in the business. Had in not been for the emergence of the Beatles in 1964, they would be folk legends."
The Cumberland Trio's sound is a combination of '60s commercial and tradtional acoustic folk music, much of it original, with a bluegrass, blues and gospel style, as well as exceptional and unique solo and harmony vocals and instrumental breaks on the 5 string banjo and lead acoustic guitar by Andy Garverick. This landmark folk recording was remastered to CD in 2000 and includes 14 songs cut live in studio in April, 1964 at RCA Nashville,TN and produced by the legendary Chet Atkins. There are an additional 9 songs recorded in December, 1963 live at The Pump Room in Knoxville,TN.
