Notes
Derek Bryant, better known as Derek Farill, was born on September 26, 1987 in Miami Florida to Annie Bryant. His mother was a single parent forced to raise two children in Miami’s’ project housing system. The drug infested violent community in which he was raised along with the gruesome murder of his father the week before his first birthday left Mr. Bryant searching for an outlet, and a way out. As Bryant neared his first year of junior high school he began to write music. His passion for music became the only thing that would silence the environment around him. Bryant states “writing my life down as it happens in a musical format is the only thing that keeps me sane”. Members of his family also took note of Bryant’s passion for music and began to encourage him, signing him up for local open-mic performance. Before Bryant knew it he was performing at various venues throughout Miami Dade County. Though Bryant tried to escape it, his environment began to take a toll on his life and on January 16, 2006 at the age of 18 he was shot six times in the housing project in which he was raised including a blow to the head that would require several operations to repair. Miraculously not even the sting of a bullet could decrease his ambition and drive to release his passion for music to world. Three months later he began working with a notable hip-hop artist as a song writer while working on his album “the first 48”. His record deal didn’t go as originally plan and eventually Bryant turn to streets, dealing drugs and other odd crimes, for survival purposes. Bryant’s life of crime led him to the Florida State Penitentiary, where he would severe a three year prison sentence. During the time Bryant was incarcerated his mother died at the age 47 from cancer. Being released from prison to a motherless world Bryant realized that all he really has left is his passion for music. Bryant has now set out on a quest determined to be the greatest lyrical Hip-hop artist to emerge from the streets of (liberty City) Miami, FL.
