Description

“What on earth is this music?” Harmonies, perfumes, colours in a suspended, liquid, oscure world; embedded counterpoints and intriguing counter-melodies; memories of remote languages; the scent of incense in a forgotten cathedral. (P.Troncon)

Notes

When, at the Biennale Musica 2003, I heard someone speak of "creative soloism", i.e. the idea of a performer who is "the author of himself, the performer of other's writings, or the creator of a parallel score", I finally rediscovered the approach to music with which I have always had an affinity. Over the course of my artistic career I have often experienced a kind of identity crisis stemming from the difficulty in finding an exact definition for my dual role as creator and performer; this also holds true with regard to the mechanisms required by the world of today's performer. Every definition has always cramped me unbearably. My appoach to music, even in my preference for song (but wich kind of song? opera or popular? I feel that both belong to me) has always demanded transversal expression, the use of diverse narrative means with the creation of texts (to match musical projects), the composition of music, research into melodies from the past and the study of ancient verbal languages. The "temporal space" in which my projects and work unfold is characterised by the constant simultaneous presence of elements, forms and influences which may appear to conflict or clash with each other but which, taken as a whole, find new and unexpected meaning: memorie drawn from remote cultures; new interpretations of historical musical forms; rethought compositional techniques drawn from axperimental research into the new languages (OpusAvantra – Avanguardia e Tradizione). The search for new aesthetic and communicative "unity" affects me as if the only space in which I can express myself were to be found by superimposing different periods and references to different cultural worlds, some of which have get to come and can only be sensed intuitively and searched for.
All of this led, in Venetia et anima, to the need to work in symbiosis with another figure, the composer, with whom I have shared the idea of music as a vital experience, at one spiritual and aesthetic. This shared path stemmed from a common search for the sense of artistic creation, a sense which was also rediscovered and experienced in freeing the archetypes which lay dormant in us, absorbing their creative energy.
