The Old Ball Glove

The Fiery Gizzard- The Fiery Gizzard is a series of hiking trails and coves in Marion & Grundy Counties of southeastern Tennessee where Jerre's Haskew ancestors settled in the late 1700's. Several families of the Haskew clan still reside in or near the area. The beauty of nature abounds with streams, creeks, waterfalls and a wide variety of trees up to 200 years old. No one really knows the true origin of the name but you've gotta admit, it's really cool! The title track of this album, Fiery Gizzard Blues, and our family record label and music publishing company proudly bear the Fiery Gizzard name!

The Songs

Fiery Gizzard Blues - written by Barbara about a love gone wrong set in a bar in an imaginary place called the Fiery Gizzard. It actually celebrates the beautiful and historic wilderness area of Jerre's Haskew ancestors and is the title track of this album.…."So come on down to the Gizzard bar….We'll swap licks for a broken heart….We're gonna tear it up past two….Let that old hound dog whine and moan….We ain't never goin' home….We're gonna rock away those Fiery Gizzard blues!"

I Wish I Were A Babe- written by Barbara in early 1964 as a "gentle" protest song in support of the Civil Rights movement in the South. It's most powerful lines recognize that discrimination against anyone challenges the rights and freedom of us all. Folk historian Nick Noble has named this song one of his Top 50 folk songs of all time.…."The night is wild and the morn comes cold….But there ain't no shackles can hold my soul….They've called me Christian, called me Black or Jew….If they call for me, they can call for you….Want to sleep in the darkness want to smile in the dawn….Just like a little babe rockin' in it's mama's arms."

Ring a Tiny Bell- written by Barbara celebrates the true Spirit of Christmas. It reminds children and adults that the most valuable gift we can give is the love that is in our hearts. …."Ring a tiny bell at Christmas….Light a little candle in the dark….And of all the gifts you bring for Christmas….Always, always bring your heart."

My Rockabye- written by Barbara to celebrate the birth of Holly's first Child, Ainsley Jane, is a beautiful lullaby inspired by her mother who often told her, "Remember you are loved." When children know are loved they carry a protective armor throughout their lives and pass it on to the next generation. All of us need to remind our children and grandchildren to remember they are truly and unconditionally loved.…."Linger with the moon awhile bring the sunrise with your smile….And I will give you wings so you can fly, fly high….And when we are far apart save me a corner of your heart….And remember you are loved, my Rockabye."

A Woman Like You- written by Barbara as what she calls "her trashy country song" about women who chase married men and the committed wives who stand their ground and fight for their marriage.…."I'm Wonder Woman; I'm just in disguise….And I can see through all your sweet little lies….I am a warrior, star-spangled and true….And he's never gonna leave me for a woman like you!"

Little Ol' Ainsley Jane- written by Barbara as a rollicking song for Holly's first child, Ainsley Jane, who was surprised to find that all little children don't have their own song! Borrow this one to celebrate your own baby or grandbaby! …."I'm gonna love you, little ol' Ainsley Jane….I'm so proud of you, little ol' Ainsley Jane….Gonna tell the world about you, little ol' Ainsley Jane….I'm gonna love my little ol' Ainsley Jane!"

You Broke My Heart- written by Barbara about the universal fact that most of us have had our hearts damaged or broken along the way but most of us have dusted ourselves off and made an even better life for ourselves. If this happens to you keep searching for your own "magic mountain."...."The sun's gonna shine on my magic mountain….The moon will kiss me while I sleep….A new love's arms are wrapped around me….And I thank my stars that I finally set me free."

Blessed Baby Child- written by Barbara to celebrate the birth of Holly's second child, James, it soon metamorphosed into a song acknowledging the birth of the Christ Child and the wonder of the births of all God's children. It became a true Gospel song!.…."I'm the thunder in the sky I'm a comet rushin' by….All the laughter and the tears, the prayers of a million years…Blood to blood and bone to bone, blessed baby's comin' home…Hear the future in my cry, I'm just a miracle alive….I'm your blessed baby child!"

If I Only Had a Tail- written by Barbara as a rollicking children's song about "tail envy"- animals, birds and fish that have tails and we humans who don't but wish we did. We plan to make this into a children's book/CD. Barbara dressed up as "A Lion Named Sam" in The Cumberland Trio's reunion concerts and being Sam taught her that a tail and how you use it are very important! Sarah was just 12 years old when she recorded the vocal.…."I'd love to be a monkey swinging' from tree….I'd love to be an eagle floatin' on the breeze….I'd love to make the oceans sound like the mighty, mighty whale….Oh, life would be so perfect….If I only had a tail!…And if you haven't got one, just act like you do….If you wanna be a cutie gotta learn to shake your booty!"

The Waffle House Blues- written by Jerre & Barbara about the trials and travails of a Waffle House waitress, inspired by a visit to a Waffle House in Chattanooga after a concert by Jerre's folk group, The Cumberland Trio. Jerre observed a waitress who seemed depressed and down on her luck…."She's just payin', payin'' down her dues….She's got those scattered, smothered, covered workin' at the Waffle House blues."

The Wonderful One-Eyed Beau Dog- written by Jerre to honor the Haskew family's beloved golden retriever, Beau, who was a friend to everyone. He lived almost 13 years and was treasured by our family and all our friends and neighbors who met him. In his later years after being "fixed," he would sleep and eat inside all day and at night signal that he wanted to go outside and would begin barking and howling at the moon, stars and assorted nocturnal critters.…."The wonderful one-eyed Beau dog, he is really neat….The wonderful one-eyed Beau dog, all day long he sleeps and eats….At night he serenades the moon while he's jammin' with the stars….'Cause the wonderful one-eyed Beau dog plays rock 'n roll guitar!"

A Lion Named Sam- written by Jerre & Barbara in 1963 as a children's song about a little boy and his imaginary playmate, a lion named Sam. It's a story about the power of imagination in us all. There is also a companion children's book of the same title presented to Jerre by Barbara as a surprise 37th wedding anniversary gift. Over 5,000 "Sam" books/CD's have entertained and inspired children, their parents and grandparents all over the nation and around the world!…."Then one night we were gathered 'round and they were a-makin' fun….A purr and a roar and through the door came Sam with a mighty lunge….His tail was wavin' in the air and his whiskers twitched with pride….For nine little lion cubs marching in line were laughin' side by side….And were they surprised!"

Song For a Drifter- written by Jerre & Barbara in 1963- the first song they wrote. It's a whimsical tune about drifting down a river leaving all troubles and cares behind with imagery of the mighty Mississippi…."The wind, a song, this lazy river and me….Troubles behind I'm driftin' lone and free….Ain't no way of knowin'; I only know I'm goin'….With the wind, a song, this lazy river and me."

Songbird- written by our close friend Michelle Young with additional lyrics by Jerre about our families' musical friendship. Jerre's nickname for Michelle is "Songbird," and his grandchildren and Michelle call him "J." Michelle performs superb harmony vocals on several songs on this album.…."Just one detail that needs tendin' to….I need a Songbird to sing it – so how ‘bout you….He says Songbird, sing us a song tonight….And as your voice takes flight….Won't you carry us away….Songbird, you're lifting our spirits high….Like a sparrow your voice will fly….And carry us away."

On My Way To You- written by Jerre at a point in his life when he was searching for the next adventure in his career, not knowing which direction he would take. He uses the imagery of driving all alone in a thunderstorm with the top down, asking himself, "What am I going to do with the rest of my life?" All of us can relate to this universal experience at some point in our lives.…."Cruisin' by a moonlit seaway or goin' mad on the L A freeway….Somewhere is my destination i am bound to roam….Burnin' bridges left behind….Backroads take me through my mind….So much to do, so little time….I've gotta find my home."

Drive-In Movie Picture Show- written by Jim Henry with additional lyrics and melody by Jerre about the surprise and excitement of going to the drive-in movie theater in the early 1950's when he was a child with his Mom, Dad and brothers Gary and Greg- a real trip down nostalgia lane.…."Two-fifty for the carload….We park in the front row….Saturday night feelin' all right….At the drive-in movie picture show!"

The Lady of the Highlands- written by Jerre after viewing the old movie Ivanhoe which was set in the Scottish Highlands, a beautiful place he visited during his business career. The song is based on the classic tale of the shining knight rescuing the fair maiden from the castle of the evil king.…."She's the lady of the highlands and no beauty can compare….To the sweetheart of the mountains brushing back her windblown hair….And with her skin as soft as dewdrops in the sunrise on the pines….She's the lady of the highlands and maybe someday she'll be mine."

Wintertime- written by Jerre during a cold winter when he was missing Barbara during her 22 years of commuting from Chattanooga to Middle Tennessee State University, where she served as Dean of the College of Business, Provost & Distinguished Professor of Economics.…."In the wintertime my mood turns blue and all my thoughts return to you….'Cause I know your love can fill my nights with sunshine….I miss you more than words can say as I await the light of day….Please come on home and love me through my wintertime."

The Old Ball Glove- written by Barbara is a powerful song and true story about the death of a 21 year old soldier and the tragedy that war brings to young families no matter which side they are on. She wrote it in her sleep after watching television coverage of the soldier's funeral and then woke to put it down on paper.…."Yes, he hugged that old ball glove….It was filled with daddy's love….And he'll miss his daddy all his life….God must cry himself to sleep at night."

The Love Story of the Ages- written by Jerre and Barbara in celebration of and reflecting and reminiscing on their 52 years of marriage from their first date at the University of Tennessee to the present with their children and grandchildren.…."Now that was long ago but their hearts remain aglow….As they pause to turn back all those pages….Through the heartaches through the pain, they found the rainbow not the rain….And wrote their song, The Love Story of the Ages."

Take Our Country Back Again- written by Jerre over his frustration at the continuing political gridlock in Washington, DC and his feeling that our nation's people must unite again to rise up and stop it. He uses state nicknames, mottos and slogans to create the imagery of the song…."From the lakes of Minnesota to the hot west Texas plains….From the coast of California to the rocky shores of Maine….It's blazin' 'cross the internet still blowin' in the wind….Let's rise up like the Phoenix and take our country back again….They've shown me in Missouri, volunteered in Tennessee….and from the mountains of New Hampshire hear them shout, ''Don't tread on me!' "

Forever- written by Jerre about and for his close friend John Parker, a widower who found love again after Jerre's encouragement of a reluctant John to ask his friend Mardi to go out with him. They're happily married to this day. "Now forever is always or maybe it's never….How will I know with no courage to tell her?….Or is it for real there's no way of of knowing….Only time will tell if our rivers come flowing together….To flow in love….Forever."

Bless Us Oh Indeed- written by Barbara based on the best-selling book, The Prayer of Jabez, about the passage in 1 Chronicles 4: 9-11 of the Holy Bible where Jabez asked God, "Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory….and God answered his request," meaning that it's good to ask God to bless us without end and inspire us to be the best that we can be.…."Now the world is still the same, full of heartaches, filled with pain….Send us a rainbow, Lord, outside the rain….When You whisper, we will shout….Lift us up let the glory out….And bless us, Lord, bless us, oh indeed….Bless us, bless us, oh indeed….Bless us, Lord, and meet our every need….Give us hope and set us free to be all that we can be….And bless us, bless us, oh indeed."
