Description
Playful, spontaneous and urban album from one of the most visible and highly regarded groups in NY's Hudson Valley, and their third, a deep study in sophisticated grooves, funky counterpoints.
Notes
From the songwriting team of Steven W Ross and Erin Hobson, an unlikely musical partnership—the intuitive musical interplay and the striking personality contrasts—between long-time collaborators. Playful, spontaneous, alt pop from one of the most visible and highly regarded groups in NY's Hudson Valley. The flavor of 1@AX is decidedly urban and self-aware. A deep study in sophisticated grooves, funky counterpoint, weaving guitars, and duet’s voices, that harmonize, and split into call-and-response dialogs before uniting for the hooky choruses.
The album features contrasting vocals, and the adventurous and playful musicianship between Hobson and Ross, along with the solid grooves of guest drummers Gary Burke (Bob Dylan, Joe Jackson), Stephen Marnell, and Dan Hickey (They Might Be Giants).
With pop hooks abound, the record also features three spoken-word pieces, street poetry and surreal stream of consciousness narratives over deep grooves drawn from multiple chapters of the American songbook. It’s a work of risk-taking, unfettered creativity that fuses pop values with earthy rhythms. The album contains studio and three live tracks, including three covers, by Ani DiFranco, Alicia Keys and Jimmy McGriff.
The Compact is Erin Hobson: vocals and guitars. Steven W Ross: mentored by legendary producer Paul Rothschild (the Doors, Janis Joplin), bass, vocals, guitars, keyboards, drums (other than as noted), and percussion.
