Description

Our music can be classified Alchemical Americana: story-based songs rooted in American culture, past and present, with a liberal dose of psychotropic mischief.

Notes

Terrain can be flat and rocky, deserted, swampy, mountainous, treacherous, pastoral, and breathtaking. The same can be said of our music. We offer our twisted bit of universe in this first offering titled Story Land.

Categorically, we would call our music Alchemical Americana. The lyrics and music are rooted in American culture, past and present, with a liberal dose of psychotropic mischief.

Terrain’s emphasis has always been on the story. Each song is a tale unto itself, populated by characters ranging from Romeo to Darwin, cast in tales of adultery, murder, adventure, lost love, and longing. This drama is drawn from life and distilled into the music of Terrain.

Terrain started as a recording project. It was an attempt by Christopher Strauch and Mark Tiborsky to explore the limits of the home studio. The early work is based on improvisations that were recorded (usually on two acoustic guitars) and embellished with overdubs. Bob Rinkes was present in the early goings lending his elegant bass lines to our development. Our first demo was a spoken word/instrumental production on which our good friend Ben Gulyas recited his poetry. Lorne Franklin joined our ensemble on percussion and we continued writing new songs and recording some of our back catalog. Steve Niple joined us on drums in 2009 and the project moved from the recording studio to the stage. The missing link, Grant Marquit, joined the band on keys in the Winter of 2011.

Terrain's debut CD Story Land was released on July 1, 2011.

The band is currently energized, performing dynamic live shows, and plotting a follow-up release.
