TAKIS BARBERIS & PETROLOUKAS CHALKIAS
IN PARALLEL

I had almost forgotten that in fact there was a stereo recording of my appearance at the Parafono Jazz Club on Thursday before Easter back in 1996, despite my having always remembered it as one of my best moments ever as a musician on stage. Perhaps it is because it was such an extraordinary concert, preceded by no more than a brief meeting -more of a preliminary agreement than a rehearsal- with "Mr Petros", as I like to call this great man a living legend of our music. Based on some popular traditional pieces (from the greek region of Epirus), Mr Petros and I lost ourselves in a dialogue of improvisation on that April night. Self-consciously at first, but then with growing ease with a little help from my friend Costas Kalogirou a constant collaborator at that time, on the indian tabla and the drums. Despite the technical problems and several little mistakes, which may have been kept me from considering a release like this for so many years. I have now decided to overlook them and share with you this musical document created together with the great Greek musician Petros Chalkias. It also shows that different people with diverse musical backgrounds can co-exist on the strength of their love for music. All of the pieces are exactly as they were played on April 11th, 1996, while the mixing and the addition of certain instruments in several instances was done by myself, followed by the fairly taxing process of technically remastering the material in order to lend a decent sound to what was quite a haphazard recording.
Sometimes, parallel roads seem to meet...
